In Rugrats season 1 episode 3, entitled "He Saw, She Saw," the babies (Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil) and their parents visit the local zoo. The episode begins with the babies in awe of the various animals they see and trying to make sense of their surroundings.
Tommy and Chuckie notice the monkeys and are fascinated by how much they resemble humans. Meanwhile, Phil and Lil are taken with the flamingos but have a difficult time pronouncing the word "flamingo."
While the babies are enjoying the zoo, their parents are having a different experience. Stu, Tommy's dad, is preoccupied with getting the perfect photo of the family. He constantly interrupts their activities to pose them, which causes tension between him and his wife, Didi.
As tensions rise between the adults, the babies wander off and end up playing in the reptile house. There, they witness a disagreement between two reptiles who are trying to decide which one of them is the fairest.
The babies take on the roles of judges and try to decide who is more beautiful – the green iguana or the black boa constrictor. This plotline leads to some hilarious moments, including the babies holding up scorecards and trying to make sense of the reptile's arguments.
Meanwhile, the adults split up when Stu and Drew, Tommy's uncle, get into a heated argument. Drew believes that Stu is too focused on capturing the perfect family photo and is ruining their experience at the zoo. Stu, on the other hand, is determined to get a good photo to prove to his colleagues that he has a happy family.
As the episode progresses, the adults continue to bicker, causing the babies to end up in a petting zoo enclosure. In the enclosure, the babies encounter a goat who has a similar dilemma to the reptiles they encountered earlier.
The goat is trying to impress a female goat, but he accidentally ruins her flower crown. The babies step in to help and create a new flower crown for the female goat, which ultimately leads to the two goats hitting it off.
In the end, the adults reconcile and come together to watch the sunset at the zoo. The babies, who are exhausted from their day at the zoo, fall asleep in their strollers, but not before Phil and Lil finally learn how to pronounce "flamingo."
Overall, "He Saw, She Saw" is a classic episode of Rugrats that combines humor, heart, and a fun trip to the zoo. The babies' interpretations of the animals and their interactions with the goat and reptiles provide a unique perspective on the world. Meanwhile, the adults' struggles with communication and priorities add a relatable layer to the episode.
