Roseanne season 5 episode 22, titled "Promises, Promises," is a classic episode of the beloved sitcom. The episode focuses on the many promises that the Conner family has made to each other over the years, and the sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant ways in which they try to keep those promises.
The episode begins with the Conner family gathered around the dinner table, bickering and teasing each other as usual. Roseanne and Dan (played by Roseanne Barr and John Goodman) are discussing the fact that they promised each other not to make any big purchases without consulting each other first. However, when Roseanne reveals that she has been eyeing a big-screen TV, Dan is less than thrilled. The ensuing argument is interrupted when Darlene (played by Sara Gilbert) announces that she has a date for the prom.
Darlene's announcement brings up a whole new set of promises. Roseanne made Darlene promise not to smoke, drink, or have sex on prom night, while Dan promised not to embarrass her by wearing a goofy tuxedo. However, as the big night approaches, it becomes clear that keeping these promises is easier said than done.
Meanwhile, Becky (played by Lecy Goranson) is dealing with her own set of promises. She promised her boyfriend, Mark (played by Glenn Quinn), that she would help him with a school project that involves dissecting a frog. However, when she discovers that the frog is still alive, she has to find a way to keep Mark from killing it without breaking her promise.
As the episode progresses, the promises start to pile up. Roseanne promises Darlene that she won't embarrass her by taking too many pictures at the prom, while Dan promises not to make her dance with him. Becky promises Mark that she won't tell anyone about his fear of frogs, while Mark promises not to tell anyone about Becky's bad haircut.
In the end, of course, many of these promises are broken. Dan shows up at the prom in a ridiculous tuxedo, much to Darlene's embarrassment. Roseanne takes so many pictures that Darlene wants to kill her. And Becky breaks down in tears when she realizes that she can't keep her promise to Mark and has to let the frog die.
Despite all the broken promises, however, the episode ends on a sweet note. Dan and Roseanne are able to put their argument behind them and come up with a funny way to compromise on the TV purchase. Darlene has a great time at the prom despite her parents' antics, and Becky learns an important lesson about the value of honesty.
Overall, Roseanne season 5 episode 22 is a classic example of the show's blend of humor and heart. It's a fun, lighthearted episode that reminds viewers of the importance of keeping your promises, even if things don't always go according to plan.
