In the thirteenth episode of Roseanne's second season, titled Chicken Hearts, Roseanne and Dan's eldest daughter Becky is set to make her theatrical debut in a school production of Romeo and Juliet.
The Conners are all excited to see their daughter take the stage, but things don't go exactly as planned. Becky has a minor meltdown before the play, revealing that she's not entirely happy with her small role as a nurse in the production.
As her family and the rest of the audience watches on, Becky's nerves get the best of her during her scene, causing her to forget her lines and ultimately run off the stage. She's devastated and embarrassed, convinced that the entire audience and her classmates think she's a terrible actress.
Roseanne and Dan try to console her, but their words of encouragement fall flat. Meanwhile, the rest of the family engages in some comedic hijinks centered around a batch of chicken hearts that Dan brings home from the supermarket.
Darlene, Roseanne's sarcastic teenage daughter, thinks the hearts are gross and refuses to touch them. Jackie, Roseanne's sister, tries to be adventurous and cook them up for dinner but ultimately can't stomach the sight of the raw hearts and nearly faints.
As the family tries to lift Becky's spirits, they debate what went wrong during her performance. Roseanne and Dan suggest that she didn't prepare enough and should have practiced more, while Darlene argues that it's just a silly school play and that Becky shouldn't take it so seriously.
In the end, Becky comes to a realization that reconciles both viewpoints. She realizes that she may not become a famous actress, but she can still pursue her passion for the arts by taking part in local theater productions and continuing to hone her craft.
Overall, this episode of Roseanne offers a heartwarming look at the ups and downs of pursuing a creative passion, while also serving up some classic Conner family humor.
