Robson Green's Coastal Lives is a British television show that explores the beauty and charm of the coastal communities around the UK. In season 1 episode 5, Robson visits the historic seaside town of Whitby, located in North Yorkshire.
The episode starts with Robson meeting local fisherman Ian Brown who takes him out on his boat to catch some crab. Ian has been fishing for over 30 years and knows everything about the waters around Whitby. He shares his stories and experiences with Robson while they enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Yorkshire coast.
Next, Robson meets a group of young surfers who love nothing more than catching the waves at Saltburn-by-the-Sea. They tell him about the surfing community in the area and how it has grown over the years. Robson tries his hand at surfing but quickly realizes it is not as easy as it looks.
After his surfing lesson, Robson visits the RNLI station in Whitby where he meets the crew and learns about their life-saving work. The station has over 100 years of history and has saved countless lives in the rough waters of the North Sea. Robson puts on a survival suit and takes a ride on the lifeboat to witness the crew's work in action.
Robson also visits a local artist, Emma Stothard, who specializes in creating sculptures of animals and birds using metal and wire. Her work is inspired by the nature and wildlife that surrounds her in the countryside. Emma takes Robson out to the moors to show him the inspiration for her latest sculpture, a life-size wire horse.
Finally, Robson meets a couple, Tony and Sarah, who run a business making traditional Whitby jet jewelry. Whitby jet is a precious gemstone that can only be found in the area and has been used in jewelry for thousands of years. Tony and Sarah explain the process of making the jewelry from the raw material to the finished product. Robson even gets a chance to make his own jet jewelry to take home.
Throughout the episode, Robson showcases the unique culture, history, and beauty of Whitby and the surrounding areas. He meets a variety of people, from fishermen to artists to surfers, who all share their love and passion for the coastal way of life. The episode is a celebration of the people and places that make the British coastline so special.
