In Roadkill Garage season 4 episode 40, titled "Jeep Thrills: Meet the BJ-5!", David Freiburger and Steve Dulcich take on a new project: a 1975 Jeep CJ-5, also known as the BJ-5. The Jeep is already in pretty good condition, with a stock V8 engine and manual transmission, but the duo want to give it some upgrades to make it even better off-road.
First, they take the Jeep out for a spin to get a feel for its stock capabilities. They quickly realize that the suspension needs some work, as the vehicle bounces around and bottoms out on rough terrain. They decide to install a set of new shocks and springs, as well as a high-steer conversion kit to improve the vehicle's handling.
Next, they turn their attention to the engine. The stock V8 is already powerful enough, but they want to see if they can squeeze some more horsepower out of it. They install new headers, an aluminum intake manifold, and a four-barrel carburetor to improve the engine's performance. They also install a new exhaust system with a set of Flowmaster mufflers for a deeper, throatier sound.
With the suspension and engine upgrades complete, it's time to take the Jeep out for a test drive. David and Steve head out to the desert to see how the vehicle performs off-road. They put the Jeep through its paces, testing its hill climbing, sandy terrain handling, and overall speed and control. The new suspension and steering upgrades make a huge difference, as the vehicle feels much more stable and responsive.
But there's one more thing David and Steve want to do before they call it a day: they want to take the doors off the Jeep and experience the thrill of open-air driving. They remove the doors and windshield, then take the Jeep out for one last spin. It's a completely different experience, with the wind whipping through their hair and the sun shining down on them.
In the end, David and Steve are thrilled with how the BJ-5 turned out. They've succeeded in making a great off-road vehicle even better, and they're already planning their next adventure in the Jeep. With plenty of new mods and upgrades to explore, there's no telling where the road (or off-road) will take them next.
