In River Monsters season 9 episode 2, entitled Ice Cold Killer, host Jeremy Wade travels to Alaska in search of a creature that has been wreaking havoc on local fish populations. With temperatures dropping below freezing, Wade battles the elements as well as his elusive quarry.
Wade begins his investigation by speaking with local fisherman, many of whom have reported losing large fish to an unknown predator. Through interviews and examination of bite marks on fish carcasses, Wade is able to determine that the culprit is likely a freshwater fish known as the sheefish.
Despite being one of the largest freshwater fish in North America, the sheefish is seldom caught by anglers due to its elusive nature. Wade teams up with local fishing expert Kate Taylor to try and catch one of these impressive fish. Using baited hooks and specialized lures, the duo is able to catch and examine several sheefish, providing valuable insight into their behavior and ecology.
As Wade continues his investigation, he learns that the sheefish may not be the only predator in these waters. Reports of a mysterious creature attacking dogs and even humans prompts Wade to expand his search to include other potential suspects.
Through interviews with eyewitnesses and investigation of reported attack sites, Wade pieces together a complex web of predation that involves not only the sheefish, but also other freshwater fish species and even marine mammals.
As the episode reaches its climax, Wade sets out to catch one of these suspected predators. Armed with a specialized fish-finding sonar and a custom-made lure, Wade heads out onto the frigid Alaskan waters in hopes of finally catching his elusive prey.
Ultimately, Ice Cold Killer is a thrilling episode that showcases the beauty and danger of the Alaskan wilderness, as well as the tenacity and skill of Jeremy Wade as a fisherman and investigator. Despite the cold and challenging conditions, Wade's pursuit of the truth takes him deeper into the heart of this mysterious ecosystem, revealing an intricate network of life and death that is both awe-inspiring and humbling.
