In season 8 episode 4 of River Monsters titled "Deadly Superstitions", host Jeremy Wade is on a mission to uncover the truth behind a deadly fish that is believed to be cursed by ancient superstitions. He travels to Guyana, deep in the heart of the South American jungle, in search of the feared arapaima, a giant freshwater fish that can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh over 400 pounds.
The locals in the region believe that the arapaima is cursed and that anyone who catches one will experience bad luck and misfortune. Despite this, the arapaima is prized for its delicious meat, which is considered a delicacy in the region.
Jeremy Wade is determined to uncover the truth behind these superstitions and to see if there is any scientific basis to them. He sets out on a grueling journey up the Essequibo River, traveling for hours through dense jungle, dangerous rapids, and treacherous waters.
Along the way, he hears tales of giant arapaima attacking boats and pulling fishermen into the water, of villagers being attacked and eaten by the fearsome fish, and of mysterious disappearances and deaths that are blamed on the cursed creature.
Despite these stories, Jeremy remains skeptical and sets out to find the truth. He sets up his fishing gear and begins to explore the murky waters of the Essequibo, using a variety of baits and lures to attract the massive arapaima.
As the days pass, Jeremy faces new challenges and struggles with the harsh jungle conditions. He battles fierce currents, dodges dangerous wildlife, and endures extreme heat and humidity as he searches for the elusive fish.
Finally, his persistence pays off and he catches a massive arapaima, the largest fish he has ever caught. But as he examines the creature and examines its behavior, he begins to wonder if there is indeed something supernatural about these mysterious fish.
With his trademark combination of scientific inquiry and local folklore, Jeremy sets out to unravel the deadly superstitions surrounding the arapaima and uncover the truth behind this enigmatic creature.
