In the second episode of River Monsters season 5, titled "Killer Torpedo," host and angler Jeremy Wade travels to the South Pacific island of Fiji to investigate reports of a deadly creature attacking locals in the waters. Rumors of a giant fish with an electric shock that can kill a human lead Wade on his quest to find out if this is true or just a myth.
Wade meets with locals who describe the creature as a "torpedo" that swims fast and attacks with a shock. He begins his search by heading out to sea and casting his line in hopes of catching a glimpse of the mysterious fish. After several unsuccessful attempts, Wade decides to try a different tactic and heads inland to a river where he believes the creature may be found.
Once in the river, Wade sets up his gear and begins fishing. It is not long before he hooks a fish on his line and realizes he has caught a giant barracuda. Despite the dangerous reputation of this fish, Wade is able to safely release it back into the water.
Next, Wade sets his sights on a more elusive target - the sawfish. This prehistoric creature is known for its long snout lined with teeth, and Wade hopes to catch one and examine its electric capabilities. He spends days trying to locate a sawfish, eventually finding a juvenile specimen. After a brief struggle, he is able to safely release the fish and continue his search.
As Wade delves deeper into his investigation, he hones in on a particular species of fish that seems to match the descriptions he's been hearing. The giant trevally, known as "GT," is a strong and aggressive fish that swims in the shallow waters around Fiji. With the help of local fishermen, Wade sets out to catch a GT and investigate its potential for delivering an electric shock.
Throughout "Killer Torpedo," Wade's pursuit of the deadly creature leads him to face a number of challenges and unexpected obstacles. From dangerous barracudas to elusive sawfish to a powerful and unpredictable GT, the waters of Fiji prove to be a formidable adversary. Wade's determination to uncover the truth behind the attacks and his commitment to safe fishing practices make for an exciting and informative episode of River Monsters.
