In the Rising Damp season 2 episode 5 titled "A Perfect Gentleman," Rigsby is excited to welcome his new tenant, a sophisticated and elegant gentleman named Singleton, whom he believes would be an ideal match for Miss Jones. However, when Singleton arrives, he turns out to be nothing like what Rigsby expected.
Instead of being a sophisticated gentleman, Singleton is a gruff and rough ex-convict, who has recently been released from prison. Rigsby is taken aback by Singleton's crude behavior and inability to fit into his idea of a perfect gentleman. However, he tries his best to be hospitable towards his new tenant, hoping that he could make a good impression on Miss Jones.
Meanwhile, Miss Jones is preoccupied with her own problems. She has recently lost her job and is struggling to find a new one. She feels embarrassed and ashamed, knowing that her status as an educated woman has been compromised. Rigsby tries to console her and lift her spirits, assuring her that everything will work out in the end.
Rigsby's hopes of pairing Miss Jones with Singleton come to a sudden halt when he discovers that Singleton has a criminal past. Rigsby fears that this news would ruin any chances of him impressing Miss Jones. However, Singleton proves to be an unlikely savior. He shows Rigsby and Miss Jones a side of himself that they had not expected, proving that he is more than just his criminal past.
As the episode progresses, Rigsby and Miss Jones begin to warm up to Singleton, realizing that he is a kind-hearted and generous person who genuinely wants to help them. They soon realize that sometimes people can surprise you, and that it's best not to judge someone based on their past.
The episode ends on a positive note, with Rigsby and Miss Jones having gained a newfound respect for Singleton. They come to realize that sometimes the unlikeliest of people can become friends, and that true friendship knows no boundaries.
