In 2016, Sundance Now released Rillington Place, a three-part miniseries that explores the true story of British serial killer John Christie. The show stars Tim Roth as Christie, Samantha Morton as his wife Ethel, Nico Mirallegro as Timothy Evans, and Jodie Comer as Beryl Evans.

Rillington Place takes place in London during the 1940s and 1950s, and opens with the arrival of Timothy and Beryl Evans in the titular Rillington Place. The young couple is desperate for a place to live and Christie, their seemingly-friendly neighbor, offers to help them out. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Christie is not the benevolent neighbor he appears to be.

The show uses a non-linear narrative structure, jumping back and forth in time to explore the events leading up to Christie's eventual capture and trial. Along the way, we see the ways in which he insinuates himself into the lives of those around him, often under the guise of helping them. We also see how his dark impulses and desires drive him to commit heinous acts of violence.

One of the most compelling elements of Rillington Place is the way it presents Christie as a complex and multi-faceted character. He is not a one-dimensional monster, but a man with a troubled past and a host of psychological issues. On the one hand, he is a cold and calculating killer, but on the other, he is a lonely and misunderstood figure who struggles to connect with others.

This complexity is brought to life by Roth's nuanced and chilling performance. He portrays Christie as a man who is always two steps ahead of those around him, constantly manipulating and deceiving those he comes into contact with. Morton is similarly impressive as Ethel, bringing a sense of vulnerability and pathos to the role of a woman who is blind to her husband's true nature.

Mirallegro and Comer are equally strong as Timothy and Beryl, providing a sense of groundedness and humanity to the story. As we watch them fall victim to Christie's machinations, we feel a sense of empathy and horror.

Overall, Rillington Place is a gripping and unsettling show that explores the darkest recesses of the human psyche. It is a testament to the skill of its creators and performers that they are able to take such disturbing material and turn it into something that is both artistically impressive and emotionally resonant. If you're a fan of true crime or psychological thrillers, this is definitely a show worth checking out.

Rillington Place is a series that ran for 1 seasons (3 episodes) between October 5, 2017 and on Sundance Now
