In this episode of Rick Steves' Europe, titled "Little Europe: Five Micro-Countries," Rick explores the smallest countries in Europe and takes viewers on a tour of their unique cultures and histories. Beginning in Andorra, a small country nestled in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain, Rick takes in the stunning scenery and learns about Andorra's unique status as a tax haven.
Next, Rick visits San Marino, the oldest republic in the world and one of the smallest countries in Europe. In addition to exploring San Marino's historic walled city and traditional way of life, Rick also learns about the country's role as a center of the Italian unification movement in the 19th century.
From there, Rick heads to Liechtenstein, a tiny country sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria. Despite its small size, Liechtenstein is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, thanks in part to its low taxes and business-friendly environment. Rick explores some of Liechtenstein's historic castles and museums, as well as its stunning Alpine scenery.
The fourth stop on Rick's journey is Monaco, the glamorous Mediterranean principality famous for its casinos, yachts, and Formula One Grand Prix. Rick delves into Monaco's history as a playground for the rich and famous, as well as its more recent efforts to diversify its economy beyond tourism and gambling.
Finally, Rick ends his tour of Europe's micro-countries in the Vatican City, the world's smallest sovereign state and the spiritual heart of the Roman Catholic Church. From exploring the magnificent St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel to meeting some of the Vatican's devoted staff and volunteers, Rick uncovers the many facets of this unique city-state within a city.
Throughout this episode, Rick showcases the diversity and richness of these five micro-countries, each with its own distinct culture, history, and way of life.
