In the second episode of the 11th season of Rick Steves' Europe, Rick travels to Switzerland to explore the magnificent Swiss Alps. He begins his journey in the French-speaking part of the country, in the city of Montreux, which is located on the picturesque shores of Lake Geneva.
Rick visits the beautiful Chateau de Chillon, a medieval fortress that sits on a small island just off the shore of Lake Geneva. He takes a tour of the castle and learns about its fascinating history, which dates back more than 800 years.
From Montreux, Rick travels to the charming town of Gstaad, which is nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Gstaad is famous for its luxury ski resorts and high-end shopping, but Rick discovers that there is much more to this quaint town than meets the eye. He takes a hike through the surrounding mountains and enjoys the breathtaking views of the alpine scenery.
Next, Rick heads to the town of Lauterbrunnen, which is located in a lush valley surrounded by towering mountains. He takes a cable car up to the top of the Schilthorn, a peak that offers panoramic views of the surrounding Alps. Along the way, Rick stops at several charming mountain villages and meets some of the locals who call this area home.
In the town of Lucerne, Rick takes a stroll through the picturesque Old Town, where he marvels at the intricate architecture of the historic buildings. He visits the Chapel Bridge, a landmark of the city that dates back more than 700 years, and learns about the tragic fire that destroyed much of it in the 1990s.
Finally, Rick travels to the town of Appenzell, which is located in the eastern part of Switzerland. Here he learns about the Swiss folk culture and tradition, including yodeling and flag throwing. He visits a local cheese factory and tastes some of the famous Swiss cheese that is produced in the region.
Throughout the episode, Rick shares his insights into the vibrant culture and history of Switzerland and explores the stunning natural beauty of the Swiss Alps. With his signature charm and enthusiasm, Rick invites viewers to join him on a thrilling journey through one of Europe's most enchanting countries.
