Rick Stein's India season 1 episode 2 explores the diverse cuisine of two vastly different Indian cities- Mumbai and Pondicherry.
The episode begins with Rick in Mumbai, the bustling metropolis known for its street food and vibrant food culture. He visits one of the oldest Irani cafes in the city, Britannia & Co, and tries their famous Parsi berry pulao and chicken berry pattice. Next, he heads to Chowpatty beach and samples some of the city's favorite beach snacks, including bhel puri, sev puri, and pav bhaji.
Moving on from Mumbai, Rick travels to the French colonial town of Pondicherry, also known as Puducherry. Here, he explores the city's unique blend of Tamil and French cuisine. He visits a local spice market and discovers the ingredients that go into the traditional Pondicherry curry powder.
Rick then meets up with a local chef, Romain Meder, to learn how to prepare a classic Indian dish- biryani. They visit a local market to gather ingredients and then head to Romain's restaurant, La Villa, to cook the biryani. Throughout the process, Romain and Rick discuss how the French and Indian culinary influences have melded in Pondicherry.
Finally, Rick gets a taste of Pondicherry's pastry culture when he visits the famous bakery, Baker Street. Here he tries a variety of pastries- both French and Indian-inspired.
