Rick and Morty is an animated science fiction sitcom that follows the adventures of a cynical mad scientist named Rick Sanchez and his easily influenced grandson named Morty Smith. In season 4 episode 4 titled "Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim's Morty," the duo embark on a wild adventure to help Morty’s pet dragon - leading to a classic Rick and Morty adventure filled with humor, action, and moral ambiguity.
As the episode opens, Morty is distraught because his pet dragon has become depressed and won’t eat. To cheer him up, Morty asks Rick to take them on a trip to a place where dragons can be understood. Rick, being Rick, isn’t particularly interested until he discovers that there is a cache of dragon guts hidden in the same place. Rick is willing to make the trip since he wants the guts for a project he’s working on. However, when they arrive at the location, they discover that it’s really a trap and they’re ambushed by a horde of dragon hunters. As they try to escape they end up transporting to a new dimension, where they encounter a very different kind of dragon.
Once transported to this new dimension, they meet a dragon named Balthromaw who has the voice and personality of a British aristocrat. Balthromaw offers to help Morty with his pet dragon’s depression, in exchange for Morty’s help. The catch is that Morty has to help Balthromaw with something that could potentially be dangerous. Rick, as usual, is not interested in any of this, until he finds out that Balthromaw’s hoard of treasure consists of powerful magic crystals that he wants to use for his own benefit. Rick then turns against Morty and decides to help Balthromaw in order to gain access to these crystals.
Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to typical Rick and Morty humor and non-stop action. There are moments where the duo gets caught up in a deadly battle between dragons and there are also moments where they have to outsmart Balthromaw, who is smarter than he appears. At the same time, Morty struggles to convince Rick that stealing Balthromaw’s treasure and betraying his trust is not the right thing to do - leading to one of the show’s classic themes of Benioff and Weiss’s Game of Thrones sly-biting: the relationship between loyalty and greed.
Overall, "Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim's Morty" is definitely another classic Rick and Morty episode, full of humor and great entertainment. It provides a deep insight into the greed and loyalty challenge and poses great questions to the audience. The animation is top-notch as usual and the voice acting is superb. While the season itself is not completely without its flaws, this episode is a stand-out and an essential watch for any Rick and Morty fan.
