Return of the Mac is a comedic television sitcom set in the world of a former boy band star. This series premiered in April of 2017 on the POP TV network and follows the fictional career of former New Kids on the Block member Joey McIntyre as he tries to make his way back into the limelight through a new career in acting.
Joining Joey are two co-stars, Adam Ray and Jamie Denbo, who play fictionalized versions of themselves in the series. Together, the three of them navigate the unpredictable career of a former celebrity and the challenges that come with trying to break out into a new field.
One of the main themes of the series is the difficulty of trying to escape past fame and the challenges that come with pursuing new ventures. Joey, in particular, is shown struggling with the transition from his successful music career to trying to make it as an actor. He is used to being the center of attention but finds himself in a much smaller pond when he enters the acting world. This leads him to make some questionable decisions in order to get ahead and be noticed.
Adam Ray and Jamie Denbo provide the comedy relief in the series, with their witty banter and over-the-top personalities. Adam, a comedian in real life, plays himself as Joey's best friend and agent. He is constantly trying to get Joey to be more marketable and capitalize on his past fame. Jamie, on the other hand, plays herself as a television host who invites Joey to be a guest on her talk show. Her character is boisterous and flamboyant, but also a bit clueless at times.
In addition to the main cast, Return of the Mac also features a number of celebrity guest stars in each episode. Some notable examples include Donnie Wahlberg, who played Joey's former bandmate and rival in one episode, and Jenny McCarthy, who appeared as herself in a later episode.
Overall, Return of the Mac is a fun and light-hearted comedy that is perfect for fans of shows like Entourage or The Comeback. It's not a groundbreaking series, but it does a great job of poking fun at the entertainment industry and the struggles that come with trying to make it in Hollywood. Joey McIntyre, Adam Ray, and Jamie Denbo have great chemistry together and their performances add a lot to the show. While it only lasted for one season, it's definitely worth checking out if you're in the mood for a good laugh.
