Tommy struggles to deal with his mother's sudden appearance in his life. She abandoned him and his family when he was a child and now she wants to reconnect with him. Tommy is conflicted, feeling both anger and longing towards his mother.
At the station, the guys deal with multiple calls, including a building collapse and a man stuck in a sewage drain. Despite the chaos, they find time to celebrate Franco's birthday with a cake and a few drinks.
Meanwhile, Sheila's obsession with Tommy continues to escalate. She shows up unannounced at the firehouse and confronts Tommy about his relationship with his mother. Later, she drugs Tommy's drink and takes advantage of him while he's unconscious.
The theme of family runs throughout the episode as the other characters deal with their own family issues. Lou struggles with his elderly mother's dementia, causing him to question his own mortality. Sean tries to be there for his pregnant wife, but their marriage still seems strained. And Black Shawn looks for a way to provide for his family after being suspended from the FDNY.
As the episode ends, Tommy finally confronts his mother about the pain she caused him and his family. While they don't exactly reconcile, they begin to understand each other a little better.
Overall, "Mom" is a emotional episode that explores the complexities of family relationships. It combines humor and heartbreak, and shows the firefighters as both heroes and flawed human beings.
