In "Live and Let Doyle," the first episode of season 2 of Republic of Doyle, we find the Doyle family still working out their interpersonal issues while investigating a case involving the murder of a trucking company owner.
The episode opens with an explosive confrontation between Jake and his father Malachy, who has returned to St. John's after a long absence. Malachy has come back to town to start a competing private investigations firm, but Jake suspects there's more to his dad's return than just business. Meanwhile, Malachy's ex-wife and Jake's mother Rose (played by the legendary Irish actress Fionnula Flanagan) is back in town as well, and she's not pleased to see her estranged husband.
As if family drama wasn't enough, the Doyles are hired to investigate the murder of a trucking company owner who was found dead in his office with a bullet in his head. The prime suspect is the victim's business partner, who seems to have had a heated argument with him shortly before the murder. But as the Doyles start digging into the case, they discover that there are several other potential suspects with powerful motives, and they begin to wonder if there's more going on than meets the eye.
As always, the Doyles' investigation is full of twists, turns, and plenty of danger. Jake and his partner Leslie struggle to stay on top of the case while dealing with their own personal issues, including Leslie's ongoing struggle with addiction and Jake's rocky relationship with his ex-wife Nikki. But with the help of his extended family (including his father, who proves to be surprisingly useful in a crisis), Jake manages to get to the bottom of the case and bring the killer to justice.
Overall, "Live and Let Doyle" is a thrilling start to season 2 of Republic of Doyle, full of the family drama, witty banter, and pulse-pounding action that fans have come to love.
