As a queen, Mary Stuart of Scotland has always had to be strategic and work behind the scenes to get what she wants, but in episode 9 of Reign's fourth season, titled "Pulling Strings," Mary is forced to become even more cunning than usual. She suspects that the English ambassador to France, Lord Narcisse, is behind the killing, and she begins laying a trap for him.
Meanwhile, Catherine de' Medici, Mary's former mother-in-law and current advisor, is dealing with her own troubles. After being betrayed by her latest paramour, Catherine is desperate to regain her power and influence at court. She devises a plan to use Mary's troubles against her, but soon finds that Mary is not as easy to manipulate as she thought.
As Mary works to uncover the truth about Lola's death, she must also contend with the ongoing threat posed by her half-brother, James. James, who has always been a thorn in Mary's side, has aligned himself with the powerful clan of the Hamiltons and is plotting to overthrow Mary and seize the Scottish throne for himself.
In order to combat these multiple threats, Mary must pull out all the stops. She enlists the help of her loyal friends, including the noble consorts Greer and Kenna, and even turns to her former enemy, French King Charles IX, for assistance.
With tensions mounting and danger lurking around every corner, Mary must stay one step ahead of her enemies if she hopes to keep her throne and her life.
