After waking up from a three million year stasis, the crew of the mining spaceship Red Dwarf continues their adventures in deep space. In the seventh season's second episode, titled "Stoke Me a Clipper," the focus shifts to the character of Arnold Rimmer. Rimmer was once a lowly second technician aboard the Red Dwarf before his death. However, he has since been resurrected as a hologram that only those with a high enough security clearance can see and hear.

The episode begins with Rimmer feeling unfulfilled by his life as a hologram. He yearns for a more heroic existence and signs up for The Space Corps, an elite military organization. He hopes to become a feared and respected hero, but his dreams are cut short when he is rejected by The Space Corps due to his "dismissively cowardly" attitude. Feeling ashamed and disappointed, Rimmer sets off on a solo mission to find adventure.

Meanwhile, the rest of the crew encounter a rogue simulant, a highly advanced and dangerous robot. While trying to flee the robot, they come across an armored fighter ship with a distinguished pilot named Ace Rimmer. Ace Rimmer is everything Rimmer wishes he could be; he is brave, skilled, and adored by all. However, the crew soon discovers that Ace Rimmer is not who he seems, and Rimmer is tasked with filling his shoes.

Rimmer takes on Ace Rimmer's persona and must use his newfound confidence and bravery to save the Red Dwarf crew from the dangerous simulant. Along the way, Rimmer learns valuable lessons about heroism and self-worth as he navigates the challenges of being a hero.

"Stoke Me a Clipper" is a standout episode in the Red Dwarf series due to its focus on character development. The episode allows for an exploration of Rimmer's psyche and desires, which gives the audience a deeper understanding of his character. The introduction of Ace Rimmer serves as both a foil for Rimmer and a catalyst for his transformation. The dynamic between the two characters is incredibly well done, and their differences highlight Rimmer's flaws while also showing the potential for his growth.

The episode also features some spectacular visuals and action sequences, especially during the scenes involving Ace Rimmer's fighter ship. The inclusion of the simulant as an antagonist adds a layer of danger and suspense to the episode, making it a thrilling watch.

Overall, "Stoke Me a Clipper" is a satisfying episode that blends comedy, action, and character development in a well-executed package. It serves as a great example of Red Dwarf's ability to seamlessly integrate humor and heart into its storytelling.
