In the premiere episode of Red Dwarf season 5, titled "Holoship," the crew of the ship encounter a group of holographic humans who have created their own vessel, the Holoship. This ship is populated entirely by individuals who have been deemed worthy by a strict meritocracy and who are dedicated solely to the pursuit of excellence in their various fields.
The crew of Red Dwarf are immediately impressed by the impeccably designed and maintained Holoship, and are further surprised to learn that the Holoship's inhabitants have no knowledge of the disaster that has befallen Earth and are completely cut off from the rest of civilization.
As they interact with the Holoship's inhabitants, the crew of Red Dwarf become increasingly enamored with the idea of joining the Holoship's meritocracy, given that life on the Red Dwarf is often chaotic and haphazard by comparison. However, the crew soon realizes that the Holoship's system of perfection comes at a high cost, and it ultimately falls to them to help the Holoship navigate its own flaws and shortcomings.
Throughout "Holoship," viewers are treated to the same blend of sci-fi action, humor, and philosophical musings for which Red Dwarf has become known. The episode also introduces a number of new concepts and characters, including the austere Meltdown - captain of the Holoship - and Rimmer's love interest, Lieutenant Nirvanah Crane.
Overall, "Holoship" is an excellent entry into the Red Dwarf canon and a great way to kick off what would become one of the show's more memorable seasons. Fans of the series will appreciate the show's continued exploration of complex themes, as well as its ever-witty dialogue and sharp comedic timing.
