The Last Day is an episode from season 3 of the British science fiction sitcom, Red Dwarf. Set in the future, the show follows the misadventures of the last surviving human being, Dave Lister, and a sentient hologram, Arnold Rimmer, as they journey through space on the mining ship, Red Dwarf.
In this particular episode, the crew discovers that the ship's onboard "psi-scan" device, which is used to predict the future, has prophesied the end of the universe. According to the scan, the crew's actions -- or lack thereof -- will result in the destruction of everything that exists.
The crew initially scoffs at the prediction, but soon realizes that the psi-scan has a perfect track record and must be taken seriously. As they try to figure out a way to avert disaster, they receive a surprising visit from a long-lost crew member, Kristine Kochanski.
Kochanski is Lister's former love interest and was presumed dead after an accident years earlier. However, she reveals that she was actually transported to an alternate universe where she has been living for the past few years. She has returned to warn the crew about a dangerous technology that will cause the end of the universe and to help them stop it.
With Kochanski's help, the crew sets out to find the creator of the technology, a genius inventor named Professor Krizlov. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including a malfunctioning matter transporter and Krizlov's deadly defenses.
As they get closer to Krizlov, the crew becomes divided on how to stop him. Rimmer wants to use lethal force to destroy Krizlov and his invention, while Lister and Kochanski want to reason with him and convince him to abandon his creation. The conflict comes to a head in a dramatic showdown between the two factions.
Ultimately, the fate of the universe rests on the shoulders of the Red Dwarf crew, and they must make a decision that could either save or destroy everything they know. In typical Red Dwarf fashion, the episode combines humor, adventure, and a touch of existential dread, making it a standout installment in the show's run.
