A teenage girl named Maddie is shown waking up in a dark alleyway, with no memory of the previous night. As she stumbles back to her house, she realizes that she's been missing for the past two days. Her friends tell her that she went on a bender and was found passed out on the street.
Maddie lives with her grandmother and has been hiding her addiction to alcohol and drugs from her family. When her grandmother finds out that Maddie has been missing, she forces her to attend rehab at a facility called Springtime Meadows.
Maddie is skeptical about rehab and doesn't believe that it's necessary for her to stay there. However, she starts to bond with the other patients and begins to open up about her addiction. Maddie also meets a boy named Wes, who is a recovering drug addict. They form a connection and Maddie is happy to have someone to relate to.
Throughout the episode, Maddie confronts the reasons why she began using drugs and alcohol. She realizes that she was trying to numb the pain of her mother's death, and that she's been carrying a lot of guilt surrounding the circumstances of her mother's passing.
The staff at Springtime Meadows encourage Maddie to participate in group therapy sessions and to be honest about her feelings. They also push her to begin making amends with the people she's hurt while under the influence.
As Maddie begins to make progress in her recovery, she faces challenges. Her boyfriend from before rehab comes to visit her, and she has to decide whether to continue their relationship or focus on her sobriety. Maddie also receives a phone call from her ex-best friend, who she fought with while under the influence. Maddie is nervous to talk to her, but ultimately decides to make amends.
The episode ends with Maddie receiving a visit from her grandmother, who tells her that she's proud of her for taking steps towards recovery. Maddie begins to realize that rehab isn't just about getting clean, but about confronting the issues that led to her addiction in the first place.
Overall, "Blackout" is a strong start to Recovery Road. The characters are well-developed and the storyline is engaging. The show handles the topic of addiction with care and sensitivity, and does a great job of showing the complexities of recovery.
