Ep 6. The Substitute / Gretchen and the Secret of Yo
- October 31, 1998
The Substitute / Gretchen and the Secret of Yo is the sixth episode of the second season of the classic animated series, Recess. The episode is split into two storylines, each following a different group of characters.
In the first storyline, "The Substitute," the gang's substitute teacher, Miss Grotke, is replaced by a mysterious and strict substitute named Mr. E. Mr. E is unlike any other teacher the kids have had before, as he introduces them to difficult and rigorous lessons. The kids become anxious about Mr. E's expectations, and soon begin to fear him.
As the day progresses, Mr. E's tough exterior begins to crack and he reveals that he was once a laid-back, favorite substitute teacher before being fired due to his lenient teaching style. The kids devise a plan to help Mr. E teach like he used to, and in the end, they are able to bring the fun back into the classroom.
In the second storyline, "Gretchen and the Secret of Yo," Gretchen is introduced to the popular game, Yo, by the new girl in school, Ashley Q. Gretchen quickly becomes obsessed with the game, spending all night trying to perfect her Yo skills and ignoring her friends.
The next day, Gretchen's friends become worried about her and try to get her attention, but she is too consumed with Yo to listen. Meanwhile, the other kids in school are also playing Yo and it becomes a distraction from their studies.
Finally, Principal Prickly bans the game from school and Gretchen is devastated. However, she soon realizes that her friends and their relationships are more important than Yo, and she decides to give up the game for good.
Overall, "The Substitute / Gretchen and the Secret of Yo" is a fun and relatable episode for kids, highlighting the importance of education and friendship over obsession and distraction.
