  • November 10, 1998

The Challenge / Wild Child episode of Recess season 2 brings us back to Third Street School, where the gang is up to their usual antics during recess. In the first part of the episode, titled The Challenge, the kids are excited to participate in the annual 5th-grade versus 4th-grade kickball game. However, when the 5th-grade captain, Randall, steals all of the good players from the 4th-grade team, the gang is left with a team of misfits including Gretchen, the smartest kid in school, and Mikey, the rotund poetry enthusiast.

The 4th-graders are quickly demotivated and feel defeated before the game even begins. But, T.J., the natural-born leader, won't stand for it. He decides to take matters into his own hands and challenges Randall to a game of one-on-one kickball, with the winner choosing the players for their respective teams. If T.J. wins, he gets to take the six best players from the 5th-grade team, but if he loses, the 5th-graders get to choose even more players from the 4th-grade team.

Watching the one-on-one game is intense, as T.J. and Randall are both equally competitive and skilled players. But, in the end, T.J. emerges victorious, and the gang is free to choose their own players for the big game. The resulting kickball game is hilarious and entertaining, as the 4th-grade team learns to work together and put their differences aside, ultimately leading to a satisfying and surprising conclusion.

The second part of the episode, titled Wild Child, takes a different turn and showcases the gang's adventures as they try to tame a wild kindergartener named Joey. In contrast to the first part of the episode, this one has a more heartwarming and sentimental feel as we see how the gang bonds with Joey while trying to teach him how to behave and interact with others.

At first, the gang is scared of Joey, who acts like a wild animal and terrifies the other kids on the playground. But, as they get to know him, they realize that he's just a kid who needs extra attention and care. They band together to create a "Wild Child Training Program" and teach Joey simple social skills, like sharing and playing nicely with others.

The scenes featuring Joey trying to adapt to human interaction are hilarious, as he continuously disrupts the other kids with his animal-like behavior. But, as the kids bond with him and teach him basic human etiquette, they start to see him change and open up. By the end of the episode, Joey has become a fully functioning member of the playground society, even shaking hands and playing cooperatively with the other kids.

Overall, The Challenge / Wild Child episode of Recess season 2 is a feel-good episode that showcases the strengths of the gang's friendship and their ability to overcome obstacles together. The first part is an entertaining sports story with a classic underdog twist, while the second part is a heartwarming tale of acceptance and growth. Both parts are full of laughs and heart and leave the viewer feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
