- November 8, 1997
The Trial / The Box is an episode from Season 1 of the animated series Recess, set in the fictional Third Street Elementary School. This episode centers around the students of Third Street Elementary School, as they encounter some unexpected challenges.
The episode starts with the gang indulging in a game of basketball, where they accidentally break a window on the school building. This results in the students being summoned to the Principal's office, where they are questioned about the incident. Principal Prickly, furious about the broken window, launches an official inquiry with the help of Judge Stone, who is the most feared judge in the school. The trial is set to take place in the school's auditorium, where the accused students will present their defense.
As the trial begins, it becomes clear that the kids are no match for Judge Stone's legal prowess. One by one, each student is interrogated, and their alibis are systematically dismantled by the judge. When it is Gretchen's turn, she is unable to defend her actions, and the judge forces her to reveal the identity of the culprit. In desperation, Gretchen points the finger at T.J, who is then called up to testify.
When T.J takes the stand, he tries to protect Gretchen by claiming responsibility for the broken window. But Judge Stone isn't convinced, and he sentences T.J to an afternoon inside 'the box', which is a small, confined space meant for detention purposes. Unable to deal with the suffocating conditions inside 'the box', T.J is desperate to prove his innocence.
Meanwhile, the rest of the gang tries to find evidence that the real culprit is someone else. They embark on a series of investigations, and finally stumble upon the truth. As it turns out, the real culprit is someone that the gang had never suspected, and they decide to take matters into their own hands.
They break into the school after hours, and set up a trap for the true culprit. When the culprit falls into their trap, they confront him and extract a confession.
With this new evidence, the gang sets out to clear T.J.'s name. They manage to infiltrate the detention room, where T.J is still confined to 'the box', and present Judge Stone with their new evidence. Judge Stone is forced to concede that T.J is innocent, and he is set free.
In the end, the gang congratulates themselves on a job well done, and they learn a valuable lesson about the importance of standing up for what is right. The episode ends with T.J thanking his friends, and saying that they are the best friends a guy could ask for.
