Ep 5. King Gus / Big Brother Chad
- October 11, 1997
In the fifth episode of Recess season one, titled "King Gus / Big Brother Chad," the gang at Third Street Elementary finds themselves dealing with two different situations.
In the first part of the episode, "King Gus," we see Gus attempting to gain some more respect from his peers. Feeling left out and generally unimportant, Gus decides to impress everyone by becoming their king. He even goes so far as to make a royal proclamation and wear a cape and crown. However, as the day progresses, Gus begins to realize that being in charge isn't as easy as he thought it would be. While his friends may have humored him at first, they quickly grow tired of his bossy behavior and start to rebel.
Gus soon realizes that his efforts to be king have actually done more harm than good, and he quickly abdicates his throne. In the end, the gang is able to forgive and forget, with everyone returning to their usual schoolyard shenanigans.
Meanwhile, in the second part of the episode, "Big Brother Chad," we see Chad, a high school student and T.J.'s older brother, visiting Third Street Elementary as part of his school's Big Brother program. T.J. is thrilled to have his brother around and quickly puts him to work helping out with various tasks. However, Chad quickly becomes overbearing, trying to control every aspect of T.J.'s life and generally smothering him.
T.J. tries to put up with Chad's behavior as best he can, but eventually reaches a breaking point. He realizes that he needs to assert his independence and stand up to his brother's overprotectiveness. In the end, Chad comes to understand that he has to let T.J. make his own choices and live his own life.
"King Gus / Big Brother Chad" is a classic episode of Recess, showcasing the show's ability to tackle complex issues and present them in a relatable and engaging way.
