Ready Jet Go! is a science-based animated television show created for children by Craig Bartlett, the creator of Hey Arnold!. The show follows the adventures of a young alien boy named Jet Propulsion and his friends Sydney and Sean. In season 2 episode 8 titled "Comet Fever/Asteroid Patrol," the gang gets excited about a comet sighting on Earth and must also patrol the galaxy for any signs of dangerous asteroid activity.
In the first segment, "Comet Fever," Jet and his siblings are watching the news on Earth when they learn about a comet that will pass close to the planet. Jet and his friends get excited and decide to teach residents of the neighborhood about comets. They learn about the different types of comets and how they are formed. Jet also shares his knowledge of the Oort cloud from which most comets originate. With the help of Sydney's dad, they build a makeshift observatory to watch the comet passing by the Earth. They teach others how to spot the comet in the sky and encourage some to photograph the event. However, when Jet's excitement clouds his judgment, his siblings admonish him and remind him about the importance of safety. In the end, they learn an important lesson about sharing their excitement for science while being safe and responsible.
In the second segment, "Asteroid Patrol," Jet and his friends are told that a nearby asteroid is on a collision course with Earth. Sydney's mom alerts SSEP (the Space Safety and Exploration Panel) to help divert the asteroid away from the planet. Jet and his friends work closely with the SSEP to divert the asteroid while learning about gravity and orbits. They take up different positions around the asteroid while SSEP tests their calculating skills by asking them to predict the asteroid's trajectory. SSEP eventually damages the asteroid's core, which slices it into two harmless pieces. They warn Jet and his friends that although this asteroid may have been small, larger ones might need a different approach. Jet and his friends learn a great deal about the universe around them while making arrangements to protect their planet from catastrophe.
In "Comet Fever/Asteroid Patrol," the children are motivated to learn about comets and space safety relating to asteroids. They are eager to share their newfound knowledge with others, and their enthusiasm for science proves infectious. Jet and his friends reflect on the importance of safety in their exploration of the universe, which is an essential message conveyed in the show. In doing so, they teach valuable lessons about science and safety while mitigating the overwhelming fear of space events. Their experiential learning approach gives viewers a comprehensive yet enjoyable picture of what could happen in the universe and how to be prepared.
Overall, "Comet Fever/Asteroid Patrol" of Ready Jet Go! challenges children to think critically, be curious, and become interested in space exploration. With a unique approach to learning, the show fills a gap that most educational shows omit: the journey to understand the universe can be just as fun as the discovery, and it's essential to make sure that one stays safe while learning.
