- November 3, 1989
In the fifth episode of the second season of Ranma 1/2, titled "You Really Do Hate Cats! (1)," viewers are introduced to a new character named Hinako Ninomiya, who is the new teacher at Furinkan High School.
Hinako appears to be a kind, sweet and beautiful woman with a love for cats. However, she has a strange power that is activated whenever she is angry or stressed out, turning her into a childlike character with a high-pitched voice.
Meanwhile, Ranma and his friends are practicing martial arts in the park, when they hear a cat's cry for help. Upon investigating, they find a group of boys aggressively throwing rocks at a small kitten. Ranma and his friends are quick to intervene and save the kitten, which they take back to the Tendo Dojo.
To their surprise, the kitten turns out to be a colony of cats disguised as one, with the ability to transform into a human woman named Shampoo. Shampoo is from a tribe of Chinese women who work as martial artists and have a strong rivalry with the Japanese warrior community that Ranma and his friends belong to.
Shampoo is on a mission to find and defeat Ranma, who defeated her in a previous fight. However, when Ranma saves her kitten form, Shampoo becomes indebted to him and decides to protect him from her tribe's attempts to get revenge.
Unbeknownst to Shampoo and the others, Hinako also has a vendetta against Ranma and his friends. She hates cats and is determined to have them removed from the school campus, even if it means ruining the lives of the students who care for them. Hinako's mission leads to several amusing situations, as she tries to take down the cats and is thwarted by their intelligence and resourcefulness.
Things come to a head when Hinako discovers Shampoo's true identity and realizes that she is also responsible for the cats on campus. In a fit of rage, Hinako loses control and transforms into her childlike form, with a voice so high-pitched that glass shatters around her.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger as the characters are left wondering how to deal with the now enraged and powerful Hinako. "You Really Do Hate Cats! (1)" sets up a string of events that will lead to even more chaos and hijinks in the subsequent episodes of the season, as the Japanese and Chinese warrior communities continue to clash and the students of Furinkan High School battle their new enemy, Hinako.
