"Queen of the Universe" is a brand-new show from Paramount+ that will take viewers on a glittering journey through the world of international drag. Hosted by the inimitable Graham Norton, the series unfolds as a singing competition that brings together drag queens from all corners of the world as they vie to become the ultimate superstar of drag.
The show sees performers from sixteen countries - including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom - compete against one another in a series of vocal challenges designed to test their musical prowess and stage presence. Each episode offers a fresh batch of performances, culminating in a thrilling elimination process that sees one queen depart the competition every week.
Norton is joined on the judging panel by RuPaul's Drag Race favorites Trixie Mattel and Michelle Visage, alongside a rotating guest judge who brings their own unique perspective to the proceedings. The format of the show is refreshingly different from other drag-based reality shows, with the singing element providing a unique twist that sets it apart.
Taglined as "The Worldwide Drag Extravaganza," the show has everything fans of the genre could hope for - amazing costumes, lip-syncing, witty banter, and incredible talent. The queens showcase not only their singing but also their dance and performance skills as they compete in front of a live studio audience week on week.
Rather than limiting itself to the American drag tradition, "Queen of the Universe" seeks to celebrate the diverse drag cultures of the world, showcasing a dazzling array of styles that incorporate everything from classical Indian dance to the exotic movements of belly-dancing.
One of the standout elements of the show is the dazzling creativity on display. The queens are constantly challenged to think outside of the box and come up with original and entertaining stagecrafts to accompany their performances. From giant blow-up unicorns to pyrotechnics, the performers go above and beyond to impress the judges and secure their place in the competition.
To add to the spectacle, the show uses Chroma key technology, known as green screen, to create a truly immersive experience for the audience. The use of this technology further highlights the diversity of the drag art form by allowing the performers to showcase their culture through stunning digital backgrounds.
At the core of this thrilling series, however, is the warmth and camaraderie between the performers. Despite the fierce competition, the queens are shown to be supportive and encouraging of each other, even as the pressure mounts. Behind the makeup and the sequins, there are real people who have worked incredibly hard to hone their craft, and this is reflected in their genuine desire to see each other succeed.
In all, "Queen of the Universe" is a show that is both visually stunning and emotionally engaging. With a distinctive format and a feast of talent on display, this will undoubtedly become the go-to show for fans of drag, music and all things glittery. It is a celebration of the transformative power of drag, and showcases the best of what the world of drag has to offer.
