It's May 11, 1965, and Teddy is a civil rights activist who is fighting to defend a young black man named Jesse Tyler who has been accused of raping a white woman named Nancy Sue Parker.
As Sam leaps into Teddy's body, he quickly realizes that he is facing a difficult and dangerous situation. The case against Jesse Tyler is purely circumstantial, but the all-white jury is prejudiced against him and seems to have already made up their minds about his guilt. Teddy is a skilled lawyer, but he is also the target of threats and violence from the local Ku Klux Klan, who are determined to see Tyler convicted and punished.
As Sam struggles to handle the legal side of the case, he also has to deal with the personal struggles that Teddy is facing. Teddy is separated from his wife and is struggling to connect with his young son. He also has to deal with the racist attitudes of many of his fellow lawyers and the local law enforcement officials, who see him as an outsider and a troublemaker.

Despite these challenges, Sam remains committed to the cause of justice and to using his scientific knowledge to make a meaningful difference in the world.
