Sam leaps into the body of a young beauty contestant named Donna in Natchez, Mississippi in the year 1958. She is participating in the Miss Deep South pageant, where she has a chance to win a scholarship to college. Initially, Sam is excited to participate in the pageant, but as he delves deeper into Donna's life, he discovers that she is not as happy as she appears on the surface.

Donna's mother is very controlling and pushy, forcing her daughter to compete in beauty pageants to fulfill her own unfulfilled dreams. Her father, on the other hand, is a drunkard who takes out his frustration on Donna and her mother. Sam realizes that Donna's life is full of misery, and decides to intervene.

Sam tries to convince Donna to quit the beauty pageant and pursue her own dreams, but she is afraid to stand up to her mother. Meanwhile, Sam's attempts to change Donna's life result in unintended consequences, such as her losing the pageant and jeopardizing her chances of winning the scholarship.

As Sam struggles to find a way to help Donna, he learns about the racial tensions in the South during the 1950s. He discovers that the pageant is segregated, and there is a separate Miss Black Deep South pageant. This revelation leads Sam to see how much racial discrimination has impacted Donna's life, as she is forced to live in a world where people are judged solely by their skin color.

Sam slowly begins to understand the complex racial dynamics of the Deep South during the 1950s, and how every aspect of life is affected by race, from beauty pageants to everyday interactions with others. Sam eventually realizes that he cannot change the world in one leap, but he can make a difference in the lives of individual people.

Through his own struggles and experiences, Sam helps Donna find the strength and courage to stand up to her mother and pursue her own dreams. With Sam's guidance, Donna realizes that she is more than just a beauty queen, and that there is more to life than just winning a scholarship.
