In Quantum Leap season 2 episode 11, titled "A Portrait for Troian - February 7, 1971," Sam leaps into the body of a struggling artist named Paul, who is in love with his art teacher, Troian. Troian, who is also engaged to her wealthy patron, Lionel, encourages Paul to pursue his passion for painting, but also warns him to be careful around Lionel.
As Sam tries to navigate Paul's world, he learns that Troian is hiding a dark secret - her fiancé is abusive. Despite Troian's pleas for secrecy, Paul paints a portrait of her that captures her true emotions, including her fear and sadness. The portrait catches the attention of Lionel, who becomes jealous and starts to physically harm Troian.
Sam must find a way to help Troian extricate herself from the abusive relationship while also protecting Paul's art career. Meanwhile, Al provides updates on the changing social and cultural climate of the early 1970s, including the youth counterculture and the feminist movement.
Through it all, Sam wrestles with his own personal demons and questions his ability to make a positive impact in each leap he takes. With his own morality and identity on the line, Sam must find a way to complete his mission and leap out of Paul's body before it's too late.
