Purgatony Season 1 Episode 4 titled "Heaven? Ken, Wait!" is a satirical animated show created by Tony Valenzuela and published by Rooster Teeth Productions. The episode features the main character Tony Pergatelli returning to his office in Purgatory after a brief failed attempt to reach heaven.
In the previous episode, Tony had been transported to heaven only to be rejected because of his past sins. Tony has spent most of his afterlife at his desk in Purgatory's Department of Social Services. However, Tony's outlook on the world, work, and afterlife is continually made more dismal by the inefficiency and bureaucracy of Purgatory. In this episode, Tony is determined to improve his afterlife.
When Tony returns to the office, he is annoyed to find his colleagues Ron and Skull Guy, exchanging light jabs at each other. Tony even exclaims, “Can you two please put down the “brosary” for a minute?” Because of his experiences in heaven, Tony has become obsessed with reaching paradise but is waylaid from his mission by distractions. Tony's supervisor, a cynical and shrewd old man named Baxter, assigns Tony to be a caseworker for Ken, a recently deceased man with a questionable record. Ken, who is falsely accused of shoplifting, was sent to Purgatory because his sin doesn’t qualify him to enter heaven immediately. Baxter tells Tony to investigate Ken's life to make sure that he will make it to heaven soon.
Tony leaves his department and goes to Ken's desk where he immediately begins to rummage through Ken's belongings hoping to find some evidence which could potentially turn him to his world view about the afterlife. Tony is about to give up when he finds something that changes everything. He discovers that Ken has a ticket to the movie theater that is only redeemable in heaven. This sparks hope in Tony, and he decides to make it his mission to help Ken reach heaven and maybe he could finally make his way out of Purgatory himself.
Throughout the episode, Tony and Ken go through the different levels and bureaucracies of Purgatory, trying to prove Ken's innocence and earn him a spot in the afterlife. They get entangled in a series of absurd situations, making it increasingly difficult to prove Ken's piety. Meanwhile, Tony is grappling with his own shifting beliefs in Purgatory's entire system. He clashes with Baxter, who just wants to push Ken through the system like he does with every other person, eager to be done with the case.
As the episode progresses, both Tony and Ken learn to be better versions of themselves. The finale of the episode is a surprising, hilarious twist that many viewers will not see coming. It's a satire that pokes fun at everything from the afterlife to the corporate world, and it does it all with a heart and humor.
