Carolyn and Derek have a spacious attic loft that's been serving them as a storage room for over five years now. The couple wants to turn the space into a beautiful guest room for friends and family, and that's where designer Samantha Pynn comes in. In this episode of Pure Design season 1, Samantha is tasked with incorporating a welcoming and cozy feel into the lofty space.
As Samantha walks into the attic, she immediately sees a lot of clutter. With pristine white walls, the space has great potential, but it's filled with boxes and general clutter. To create a warm and inviting space, Samantha starts by decluttering. She works with Carolyn and Derek to decide which items they should keep, throw away, and donate.
With a clean and empty canvas, Samantha wants to add a few elements to the area to make it high-end, cozy and stylish while being functional. The main concern is how to provide privacy in the loft since the walls don't meet the ceiling, but Samantha has a few tricks up her sleeve.
The first step is to install charming curtains that will address the insufficient privacy issue and also help to section off the room. Samantha then chooses a natural palette of colours, with a predominant accent colour of ivory. The overall design is a chic and cozy space that feels like a country retreat and also has a fresh, modern feel.
Samantha decides to incorporate a four-poster bed that is both elegant and warm into the design. The bed has soft, inviting linen bedding that complements the natural colours, and the linens on the bed feature charming prints that add character to the space. She also selects some vintage pieces for the room, like a chair with a sleek tension and an old Desk that will be repurposed as a stylish vanity.
To break up the large space, Samantha defines different zones of the loft and chooses furniture that will serve multiple purposes. For example, the bed features storage drawers underneath to provide additional function in the room. Samantha also chooses reading lamps for the night tables, and a chandelier for overhead lighting to create a feeling of luxury.
The natural focus of the loft is the stunning painted white fireplace, and Samantha makes sure to highlight this feature in her design. She frames the fireplace with antique French doors from the 19th century, which are both practical and stunning.
To finish, Samantha adds small elements that will spark joy for Carolyn and Derek every time they enter the loft. Some of these elements include scented candles, an array of vases and various decorative objects that fit the cohesive design.
Overall, in this episode of Pure Design season 1, Samantha Pynn creates a warm, elegant, and cozy space that defies its use as a storage unit. Carolyn and Derek's new guest bedroom is now a welcoming and luxurious space that they will be proud to invite family and friends to.
