In Project Runway season 16 episode 11, titled "Driving Miss Unconventional," the remaining designers are tasked with creating avant-garde looks using unconventional materials found at a car dealership. The designers are given free reign to scavenge materials such as seat belts, car parts, and upholstery to use in their designs.
As the designers start to sketch out their ideas, they quickly realize that using these materials will be challenging. Many of the materials are tough and hard to manipulate, and some designers struggle to figure out how to incorporate them into their designs. The designers have to balance their creativity with practicality, as they must construct their garments in a short amount of time while working with unconventional materials.
As the designers start to work, the judges – Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia, Zac Posen, and guest judge Carly Chaikin – come to the workroom to see how they are progressing. They offer feedback and advice, praising some designers for their innovative use of materials and challenging others to take more risks.
As the clock ticks down, the designers work frantically to finish their looks. Some of the designers hit roadblocks as they struggle to execute their designs, while others race to finish their garments in time for the runway show.
Finally, it's time for the runway show, and the designers' unconventional looks are on display. Some designers have truly pushed the boundaries of what's possible with car materials, using seat belts to create interesting shapes and turning car parts into unexpected accessories. Other designers falter, creating looks that are too wearable or that don't quite live up to the challenge.
After the runway show, the judges critique the looks and decide on the winner and loser of the challenge. Some of the designers are praised for their innovative use of materials, while others are criticized for playing it too safe or not completely following the challenge guidelines.
Ultimately, one designer is sent home while another is declared the winner of the challenge and moves on to the next episode. As always, the designers are left to contemplate their successes and failures and prepare for the next challenge in the competition.
