In Which Sam Receives an Unexpected Visitor is the second episode of the first season of Private Practice. The episode follows the team of doctors at the Oceanside Wellness Center as they each deal with personal and professional challenges.
Sam, the owner of the practice, is surprised when his sister, Corinne, shows up unexpectedly. Corinne has a history of drug addiction and trouble with the law, and Sam is hesitant to let her back into his life. However, when she reveals that she's pregnant and needs his help, he reluctantly agrees to take her in.
Meanwhile, Addison, the newest member of the practice, is struggling to fit in with her new colleagues. She's used to being the best at everything, but she can't seem to get on the same page as the rest of the team. When a patient comes in with a difficult pregnancy, Addison sees it as an opportunity to prove herself, but her approach may do more harm than good.
Cooper, the pediatrician, is dealing with his own personal crisis when he learns that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant. He's unsure if he wants to be involved in the child's life, but Charlotte, his current girlfriend, encourages him to step up and be a father.
Meanwhile, Violet, the therapist, is struggling to keep her personal life separate from her professional life. She's started dating a patient's brother, but she's unsure if it's appropriate to pursue a relationship with him. When the patient finds out, Violet must navigate the tricky ethical implications of the situation.
In addition to the personal challenges facing the doctors, the episode also deals with medical ethics and the complications that can arise when doctors become emotionally involved with their patients. Ultimately, the episode shows the doctors at the Oceanside Wellness Center working to balance their personal lives with their professional obligations, while making difficult choices along the way.
