Princess Tutu is an anime series which follows the story of a mythical bird named Drosselmeyer who creates a story with a prince and a ballerina. The ballerina falls in love with the prince but cannot confess her feelings to him. Drosselmeyer gives the ballerina a pendant that enables her to become Princess Tutu and dance out the feelings of people who are in distress. The show is set in a world where characters from different stories coexist and follows Princess Tutu as she navigates through this world.
Season 1 episode 2, Heart Shard, starts off with Princess Tutu encountering a girl named Pique. Pique is a talented ballerina who is competing in an upcoming ballet competition. However, she is unable to dance properly due to an injury. Princess Tutu offers to help her and in doing so, she discovers that Pique has a heart shard missing. These heart shards are pieces of people's emotions that have been scattered across the world and it is Princess Tutu's responsibility to find them and return them to their rightful owners.
Princess Tutu sets out to find the missing heart shard and ends up in a deserted town where she sees a boy named Mytho. Mytho is a mysterious character who seems to have no emotions. Princess Tutu observes Mytho and realizes that he is the one missing the heart shard that belongs to Pique. She confronts Mytho and tries to return his heart shard to him, but he refuses to take it. He believes that having emotions only leads to pain and suffering and he doesn't want to experience that.
Princess Tutu tries to convince Mytho that having emotions is part of the human experience and that it's what makes life worth living. However, Mytho is stubborn and refuses to listen to her. Meanwhile, Pique is still unable to dance and is becoming increasingly frustrated. She decides to take matters into her own hands and steals the heart shard that belongs to Mytho. Pique believes that if she has Mytho's heart shard, she will be able to dance perfectly again and win the competition.
Princess Tutu realizes what Pique has done and goes after her. She finds herself in a dark, mysterious forest where she encounters a group of crows. The crows attack Princess Tutu and she is forced to fight them off. She eventually finds Pique and convinces her to return the heart shard to Mytho. Pique does so and in doing so, she is able to dance perfectly once again.
Mytho, who is watching from a distance, sees how happy Pique is and realizes that having emotions isn't all bad. He takes the heart shard and puts it back in his chest, restoring his ability to feel emotions. Princess Tutu is overjoyed and dances for Mytho, expressing her happiness for him.
The episode ends with Mytho thanking Princess Tutu for helping him and agreeing to be her friend. Princess Tutu accepts his offer and the two continue on their journey through the world of stories.
