In the first episode of Princess Jellyfish, we are introduced to our protagonist, Tsukimi Kurashita, an 18-year-old otaku girl who shares a house with a group of women who are similarly “geeky”. Together, they call themselves “the Sisterhood”. Each member of the Sisterhood has a unique passion, whether it be jellyfish, trains, or traditional Japanese clothing.
The episode begins with Tsukimi on her way to a pet store to purchase food for her beloved jellyfish. However, she is quickly deterred by the presence of a stylish woman on the street who seems to be struggling with her high heels. Tsukimi immediately recognizes the woman as being “fashionable” and has a panic attack - she is terrified of fashionable people. In fact, Tsukimi is so frightened that she hides behind a pillar until the fashionable woman is gone.
Once Tsukimi makes it back to the Sisterhood’s house, we are introduced to all of the other members, including the playful Mayaya, the quiet Banba, the kind-hearted Chieko, and the motherly Jiji. The Sisterhood is more than just a group of roommates - they are a support system for one another. Each member of the Sisterhood has their own insecurities and anxieties but they find solace in their shared interests.
When Tsukimi returns to her jellyfish tank, she finds that one of her beloved jellyfish is on the brink of death. In desperation, she runs to the pet store where she meets the same fashionable woman from before. However, this time, Tsukimi quickly realizes that the woman is not so scary after all - in fact, the woman is quite friendly and helpful. The fashionable woman helps Tsukimi choose the right food for her jellyfish and ensures that it will survive.
Just as things seem to be looking up, Tsukimi realizes that she has left her money at home. The fashionable woman offers to pay for the jellyfish food and Tsukimi thanks her gratefully. However, as Tsukimi is leaving the store, she overhears the fashionable woman describing her as “pathetic” to her friends.
This moment is a turning point for Tsukimi. She decides that she must become more fashionable in order to earn the respect of others. However, this is easier said than done. Tsukimi has no sense of style whatsoever and is completely out of her depth in the world of fashion.
The episode ends with Tsukimi being approached by a stylish woman who invites her to a party. Tsukimi is completely overwhelmed by the invitation and doesn’t know what to do. The rest of the Sisterhood encourages her to attend the party and support her in any way they can.
Overall, “Sex and the Sisterhood” is a compelling introduction to the world of Princess Jellyfish. The episode sets up the premise of the show - a group of misfits who support one another through their struggles - while also introducing the charming and relatable character of Tsukimi. Even though the episode deals with some heavy themes (insecurity, anxiety, and societal pressure), it is still light-hearted and playful. This is a promising start to the show and leaves the viewer eager to see what happens next.
