Ep 7. If You Build It
- March 8, 2018
In this episode of Port Protection season 3, titled "If You Build It," the residents of the small coastal Alaskan town continue to make progress on their various projects, building and repairing in order to prepare for the coming winter. After last week's heavy storms, some of the locals are in need of new shelters and repairs to their homes, and they work tirelessly to ensure they are ready for the next round of harsh weather.
One of the main focuses of this episode is the construction of a new cabin by resident Sam Carlson. Sam has been working on this cabin for months, and it is finally beginning to take shape. However, he is facing some unexpected challenges along the way. When he sets out to collect the lumber he needs for the roof, he finds that the trees he selected have rotted from the inside out, leaving him with unusable wood. Undeterred, he searches the woods for other options and eventually finds a stand of healthy trees that he is able to harvest.
With his new lumber in hand, Sam sets to work on the roof. But he soon realizes that he doesn't have enough materials to finish the job. He heads to town to pick up some more, but finds that the local hardware store is out of stock. After consulting with some other residents, he comes up with a new plan that will allow him to finish the roof using materials he already has on hand. It is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people of Port Protection, who have learned to make do with what they have in order to survive in this remote corner of the world.
Meanwhile, Mary Miller is busy repairing her boat after it suffered damage in the recent storm. She has ordered a replacement part that she needs to complete the repairs, but it has not yet arrived. Frustrated and eager to get back out on the water, she decides to take matters into her own hands and attempts to fix the broken part herself. With the help of some of her neighbors, she is able to successfully repair the boat, giving her the freedom to continue fishing as she needs to in order to survive.
Another major storyline in this episode involves the search for a missing hunter. One of the residents of Port Protection has gone off into the woods alone to hunt, and has not returned. The other residents band together to start a search party, combing the woods for any sign of the missing man. As they search, they also discuss the dangers and risks of living in this remote area, where accidents and mishaps can easily turn deadly.
As always, the people of Port Protection demonstrate their incredible resilience and determination in the face of adversity. They are living in a harsh, unpredictable environment, but they have learned to work together and support one another in order to thrive. Through their hard work and perseverance, they are building a life for themselves and their families in one of the most challenging and beautiful places on earth.
