- April 9, 2017
In the fifth episode of the third season of Port Protection, titled "Family Matters," viewers are taken on a journey through the lives of the residents of this remote Alaska community, as they navigate the wild and unpredictable terrain of their surroundings, as well as the complex relationships that exist between them.
At the heart of this episode is the theme of family - both biological and chosen - and the various challenges and triumphs that arise from these connections. Throughout the hour-long episode, we follow the stories of several of the show's main characters, as they grapple with issues ranging from personal health crises to disagreements and tension within their own clans.
One of the primary plotlines of the episode revolves around the members of the Selden family, who have a long history in the area and are widely considered to be one of the most established and respected families in Port Protection. When patriarch Curly Selden falls ill with a serious medical condition, his children and other family members scramble to support him and each other in the face of this crisis. As they juggle work, family obligations, and the urgent need to get Curly to a hospital for treatment, tensions between certain members of the family begin to surface, revealing long-simmering resentments and grievances about past decisions and actions.
At the same time, other residents of Port Protection deal with their own family-related issues, such as Sam Carlson's efforts to secure a safe future for his own children in an unpredictable world. As he contemplates his own mortality and the dangers that surround them, Sam grapples with feelings of fear and uncertainty, while also drawing strength and determination from his deep love for his family.
Throughout these various storylines, viewers are treated to stunning shots of the rugged Alaskan landscape, as well as insights into the unique challenges and rewards of life in a place like Port Protection. From the difficulties of obtaining medical care in a remote location, to the practical and emotional support that community members offer one another in times of need, this episode offers a multi-layered look at what it means to be part of a community - and a family - in one of the most beautiful and unforgiving places on earth.
As the episode draws to a close, viewers are left with a sense of both hope and uncertainty, as they witness the many ways in which the residents of Port Protection have come together to support one another, while also acknowledging the difficulties and complexities that exist within even the closest of families. Through their struggles and triumphs, however, one message remains clear: in Port Protection, as in life, family truly does matter.
