In season 1 episode 4 of Port Protection, titled "Dead Standing," the tight-knit community faces another test as winter sets in. The episode starts with curator Hans briefing the group on a new threat - standing dead trees. These trees have been killed by insects and are now highly volatile - one small spark could set them ablaze. Hans and his team have the task of safely removing the dead trees before they become dangerous.
Meanwhile, Sam has a different problem on his hands. His generator has gone out, and he needs to fix it before he runs out of power. With the winter season in full swing, Sam knows he needs to keep his cabin heated to keep him and his family safe. He sets out to fix the generator but discovers that he needs a part that he doesn't have. In a moment of desperation, Sam makes a dangerous decision to take apart the generator and try to fix it himself.
Over at Mary's cabin, the water supply is drying up, and it's up to Timbi to find a new source of water. She sets out with a group to find a natural source of water with hopes of finding a solution to keep Mary's cabin running. The group hikes through the snowy terrain, hoping to find something that will help. As they approach a stream, they realize that it's frozen over, and they can't extract any water. Timbi is determined to find a solution and continues to search for alternatives.
As the day progresses, the community's focus shifts to the danger of the standing dead trees. Hans and his team begin removing the trees using a combination of hand saws and chainsaws. The team works together to clear the area, making it safe for the community. They also work on some of the trees that are dangerously close to the cabins and create a strategy to prevent any of them from falling on the houses.
Throughout the episode, tension builds as the residents of Port Protection face one challenge after another. As winter sets in, it's clear that they need to come together to support one another if they hope to survive the season. With dangerous trees, power outages, and water shortages, the community must rely on one another to overcome their obstacles. The episode ends on a hopeful note, with the community rallying together to face the challenges of the harsh Alaskan winter.
