Ash and his friends are traveling through a forest when they come across a Skitty that is being chased by a group of Spinda. They manage to save the Skitty and take it to a nearby Pokémon Center to check if it's okay. Nurse Joy confirms that Skitty is fine and suggests that they should leave it with her to ensure its safety, but the gang decides that they want to take care of Skitty themselves.
As they continue on their journey, Skitty becomes more and more attached to the group. Brock makes it a special food and May knits it a scarf. They even put together a special dance performance for Skitty, which it seems to love. However, there's one person who seems to be struggling with Skitty's presence - Max.
Max has always wanted his own Pokémon, but he has never been able to catch one. He feels jealous that Skitty has become so attached to the group and not to him. May tries to cheer him up and suggests that he could take care of Skitty while they go off to train, but Max doesn't think he's ready for that responsibility.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket overhear the group talking about Skitty and decide that they want to capture it. They come up with a plan to lure Skitty away from the group by pretending to be lost and in need of help. While the gang is distracted, Team Rocket manages to capture Skitty and take it to their hideout.
When the group realizes that Skitty is missing, they set out to find it. Max, feeling guilty about his earlier behavior, suggests that they split up to cover more ground. He sets out on his own, determined to find Skitty and make things right.
While searching for Skitty, Max comes across a Spinda that seems to be attracted to him - just like Skitty was to the group. This gives him an idea, and he decides to use the Spinda's attraction to lure Skitty to their location. The plan works, and they manage to rescue Skitty from Team Rocket.
After the ordeal, Max realizes that taking care of a Pokémon is a big responsibility and that he's not quite ready for it yet. However, he's grateful for the experience and hopes to one day have a Pokémon of his own.
In the end, Skitty is returned to the Pokémon Center, where Nurse Joy thanks the group for taking care of it. The gang continues on their journey, but they all have a newfound appreciation for the responsibility that comes with taking care of a Pokémon.
