Ash and his friends find themselves on Route 1, the first route of the Alola region. After meeting up with Professor Kukui and his Rockruff, they set out to complete an important task: Loading the Dex! In order to do this, Ash and his friends must catch as many Pokémon as possible and record them in their Pokédex.
As they explore the route, they encounter several new Pokémon, including Pikipek and Yungoos. Along the way, they also meet a new rival, a young trainer named Gladion who has a powerful Type: Null.
The group splits up to cover more ground, with Ash teaming up with Rockruff and Litten, and Kiawe and Lana going off on their own. While searching for Pokémon, Ash comes across a wild Grubbin and decides to catch it. Rockruff helps by using its keen sense of smell to track down the elusive Pokémon.
Meanwhile, Kiawe and Lana come across a group of wild Tauros and attempt to catch them. However, their attempts are thwarted by the stubborn nature of the Tauros.
Back with Ash, he and Rockruff encounter a group of wild Bounsweet and attempt to catch one. However, they are interrupted by Gladion and his Type: Null. Gladion challenges Ash to a battle, which he accepts.
During the battle, Gladion's Type: Null proves to be a difficult opponent, as it is able to resist the attacks of both Rockruff and Litten. However, Ash devises a strategy and is able to defeat Type: Null.
After the battle, Gladion reveals that he is searching for information on the mysterious organization known as Team Skull, who are causing trouble throughout the Alola region. Ash and his friends vow to help Gladion in his mission.
With the battle over, Ash and Rockruff return to their quest to catch as many Pokémon as possible. They eventually come across a wild Mudbray, which proves to be a powerful opponent. However, with the help of Litten and the rest of his team, Ash is able to catch the Mudbray and add it to his Pokédex.
With the task of Loading the Dex complete for now, Ash and his friends set their sights on the next challenge awaiting them in the Alola region.
