Ash and his friends arrive at the Safari Zone, where trainers can observe and catch rare and exotic Pokemon in their natural habitats. However, they soon discover that the Safari Zone's Warden has been targeted by a group of poachers who are after a rare and valuable Pokemon, the Mantyke. The Warden is determined to protect the Mantyke and its habitat, but the poachers are equally determined to capture it for their own profit.

The group decides to help the Warden protect the Mantyke, and they split up to cover more ground. Brock and Dawn search for the poachers while Ash and Pikachu accompany the Warden to guard the Mantyke. However, the poachers are cunning and manage to avoid the group's detection.
