Ash, Misty, and Brock travel to the Johto region and enter a new town called Greenfield. The trio finds that the town is in trouble because it is suffering from a severe drought. The crop fields are drying up, and the people have no water to drink or give to their Pokemon. The mayor is at a loss and does not know what to do to help the town.
As Ash, Misty, and Brock explore the town, they hear about an old legend that tells how a group of Pokemon known as the Water Flowers can summon rain to end a drought. The three friends set out to find the Water Flowers, and with the help of the townspeople, they learn that the flowers are located in a nearby cave.
As Ash and his friends venture through the cave, they come across a group of Digletts and Dugtrios. They discover that the Digletts are struggling to grow their crops because of a lack of water. Ash and his friends decide to help by pumping water from the cave into the Digletts' fields.
As they work, they uncover a tangled mess of vines that have been blocking the water from reaching the crops. Ash asks his Pokemon to help clear the vines, but they soon realize that the vines are alive and acting on their own. The group soon discovers that a strange sentient plant known as Ivysaur has been controlling the vines.
Ivysaur is angry that the humans and Pokemon have taken water from the cave, causing the plant's young to suffer. The group tries to reason with Ivysaur, but the stubborn plant won't listen. Ash and his friends are forced to fight Ivysaur and its evolved form, Venusaur.
The battle is fierce, and both sides take heavy damage. However, Ash's Pikachu manages to deliver a powerful electric attack that defeats Venusaur. After the battle, Ivysaur begrudgingly admits defeat and unblocks the vines, allowing water to once again reach the Digletts' fields.
The victory brings immediate relief to the drought-stricken town of Greenfield. The Digletts' crops grow healthy and strong, and the townspeople are grateful to Ash and his friends for their help. The town's mayor declares them honorary citizens of Greenfield, and the trio continues on their journey through Johto, ready to face whatever adventures lie ahead.
