Ash and his friends arrive in a new town where they learn about an ongoing excavation of ancient fossils. The excavation is led by a famous paleontologist named Dr. Kenzo who is assisted by his granddaughter, Janina. The group meets them and Janina takes a liking to Brock. Dr. Kenzo tells the group that he has found an unidentified fossil and asks for their help to identify it.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket is also interested in the excavation and they sneak into the dig site to steal fossils. As they attempt to make their escape, they accidentally set off explosives which release a swarm of Aerodactyl, a prehistoric Pokemon. The Aerodactyl begin to attack the town and Ash, his friends, and the paleontologists work together to fend them off.
The group soon realizes that the unidentified fossil Dr. Kenzo found is an Aerodactyl and that it is the reason for the recent attacks. With the help of their Pokemon, they capture the Aerodactyl and return it to its natural habitat. Dr. Kenzo is grateful to the group for their help and they continue on their journey.
Throughout the episode, Ash and his friends learn about the importance of preserving our past and the impact it can have on the present. They also learn about the significance of teamwork and how working together can accomplish great things.
