Ash, Misty, and Brock continue their journey through the Johto region, encountering new friends and battling new opponents along the way. Katrina comes up with an idea to use the sap from the tree to create a decoy that can trick Team Rocket into thinking they have the real thing. Her plan works, and Team Rocket is fooled into thinking they have the tree. Ash, Misty, Brock, and Katrina then team up to rescue the Marill and get the real tree back to safety.

In the end, the tree is saved, the Marill are protected, and Katrina's grandfather is cured. The trio bid farewell to their new friends and continue on their journey.
