Ash, Misty, and Brock are on their way to the Johto League Championship. However, they decide to take a small detour and visit a nearby park. At the park, they come across a friendly young girl named Daniela who invites them to watch her twin siblings, Tommy and Tilly, in a Pokémon Battle tournament.
Tommy and Tilly are both highly skilled trainers, but Tommy is too serious and becomes upset when he loses. Tilly, on the other hand, is carefree and always has a smile on her face. While the group watches the tournament, they notice a boy named Casey who is always scheming and seems to be up to no good.
The tournament is soon interrupted by Team Rocket, who steal all of the competitors' Pokémon and escape. However, they leave a small Pichu behind who is now separated from its trainer. Tilly takes a liking to Pichu and decides to team up with Ash and his friends to find the stolen Pokémon and return them to their rightful trainers.
As they set off on their mission, they come across Casey who has also been looking for the stolen Pokémon. Despite their suspicions about him, they allow him to join their quest. The group quickly discovers that the stolen Pokémon are being used in an underground Pokémon Battle ring. They devise a plan to infiltrate the ring and free the Pokémon.
During the rescue mission, Tilly takes the lead and shows great creativity and strategy, even impressing her more serious brother Tommy. She also makes friends with the rescued Pokémon and helps them to escape. The group successfully frees all of the Pokémon and returns them to their trainers, but they must still stop the Pokémon Battle ring from operating.
In a final showdown with the ring's leader, Tilly uses her wit and charm to convince him to shut down the operation and turn himself in. With the mission complete, the group says goodbye to Tommy, Tilly, and Daniela, and continue on their journey to the Johto League Championship.
With the message of teamwork, creativity, and fairness through battling, "Grin to Win!" shows how people should think about the importance of battling well, which not only demonstrates strength but also love and care for your Pokémon.
