Ash and his friends arrive in Sunnyshore City, the location of Ash's next Gym battle. However, they soon discover that the Gym Leader, Volkner, is feeling unmotivated and uninterested in battling. Despite this setback, Ash still challenges Volkner to a battle, hoping to reignite his passion for Pokemon battles. Meanwhile, Team Rocket has also arrived in Sunnyshore City with their latest plan to steal Pikachu. As Ash and Volkner's battle heats up, Team Rocket's interference could make all the difference.
