Ash and friends arrive at a nearby town for a break from their journey, where they discover that there's an annual contest being held. The contest that takes place is known as the Pokémon Triathlon, where trainers and their Pokémon compete to be the first to complete a set of tasks. Ash and his friends are excited about the competition and decide to participate.
Before the competition begins, Ash meets up with an old friend named Angie. The two of them used to compete in the Pokémon Triathlon when they were kids. Angie recalls that Ash used to be so focused on winning that he would sometimes forget about the importance of enjoying the competition. Ash takes this to heart and vows to have fun during the Triathlon, regardless of the outcome.
The competition consists of three events: a mountain climb, a race through a forest and a river race. The first event, the mountain climb, requires trainers and their Pokémon to scale a nearby mountain. Ash and Pikachu are up against some tough competition, including Angie and her Monferno. However, thanks to Pikachu's speed and agility, Ash and Pikachu manage to come out on top.
The second event, the forest race, takes place in a densely packed forest. Trainers and their Pokémon must navigate the forest and reach the finish line before their opponents. Ash and Pikachu are up against Angie and Monferno once again, but this time they face even tougher competition from a group of rogue Blastoise. The Blastoise do their best to slow Ash and Pikachu down, but with some quick thinking, Pikachu manages to outsmart them and cross the finish line first.
The final event, the river race, takes place on a fast-flowing river. Trainers and their Pokémon must swim downstream and reach the finish line before their opponents. Ash and Pikachu are confident going into the race, but the competition is fierce. They face off against a group of Lapras, who prove to be formidable opponents. However, with some help from a mysterious twerp with a twig for a weapon, Ash and Pikachu are able to use the river's current to their advantage and cross the finish line first.
After the competition, Ash meets up with Angie once again. They reminisce about old times and how much the competition has changed since they were kids. Angie notices Ash's newfound appreciation for having fun during the competition and thanks him for reminding her of the same thing. Ash and his friends then continue their journey, having won the Triathlon and learned a valuable lesson along the way.
